Marilyn's biography

Born on June 1st, 1926 at 9:30 am of the morning in Los Angeles Général Hospital. On the birth certificate we can read Norma Jeane Mortensen but she was sometimes called Norma Jeane Baker. We ignore who is really his father, the name of Mortensen is the one of the second husband of his mother but this one would have left her before the birth of Norma Jeane.  On the other hand, the mother of Norma Jeane had a connection with one of her working colleagues during the absence of her husband and it for several months. The childhood of Norma Jeane is rather chaotic. Her mother places her in family of adoption while the baby is old only of some days. Her mother comes to see her only the weekend and sometimes rest for a long time without seeing her daughter because she makes frequent stays in psychiatric hospitals.  It seems that it is a particular line to the maternal family of Norma Jeane.

The first seven years of the girl are rather stable. Having put enough money aside to offer itself a bungalow the mother of Norma Jeane gets back her daughter. This situation does not last for a long time because her mother is again interned in psychiatric private hospital. Norma Jeane is confided to diverse families of adoption and orphanages under the guardianship of her "aunt Grace" a friend of her mother. But when Grace decides to get married she abandons a little Norma Jeane, this one having no very cheerful childhood is very felt. Grace obtains the official guardianship of the child and this one thus comes to live with Grace, her husband and occasionally the children of this one.

In 16 years Norma Jeane wife Jim Dougherty a 5-year-old oldier. Marriage "a little" "arranged" by "aunt Grace". The ceremony with place on June 19th, 1942 at 8:30 pm. Norma Jeane begins housewife's life, but the war incites her husband to make a commitment in the navy. In spite of the diligent attendance of the cinema of its district Norma Jeane misses hard. She finds some work as tax auditor of parachutes in it R. Smooth Co.

A photographer of the army while having for order to photograph women in the work to raise the morale of the troops which notices it. She makes the cover of the magazine "Fank" of June 26th, 1945. Full of insurance and fed by dreams of glory since her childhood, she appears at Emmeline Snively's models' agency " Blue Book ". It is Miss Snively who incites her to discolor in blonde for more "spine". She begins then to say to itself that model's career is incompatible with that of the wife and in spite of the hesitations of Jim obtains the divorce which will be pronounced on October 2nd, 1946.

From 1946 she makes the cover of all the magazines, Miss Snively arranges her an interview with Ben Lyon the talented recruiter of the 20th Century Fox who allowed her to make a screen test. The verdict is without appeal: she is provided with a determining quality, the "sex appeal". Daryl Zanuck gave the order in Lyon to make her a contract sign. But Lyon has a brilliant initiative it is to give a new name to this new woman. He proposes Marilyn in homage to the actress Marilyn Miller and it is Norma Jeane who proposes Monroe the surname of her maternal grandmother. She agreed nevertheless to make her legal name only 7 years before her death.

She shoots two small roles for Fox but her contract is not renewed. She signs then a trial contract of 6 months with Columbia where she plays some secondary roles in films of series B. During this time she takes lessons of dramatic art and diction. Columbia does not renew its contract. Marilyn is in the unemployment. She agrees then to pose for numerous photo reports notably with Tom Kelley who realized the famous calendar scandal or she poses bare.

In 1950 Groucho Marx engages her for the film " Love happy " because according to his her statements " she has the most beautiful bottom of the profession! " For some months she lives with Johnny Hyde an important and fortunate agent who wants to marry her and to make it his heir but she does not want to hear about it. He manages all the same before his death to make engage Marilyn for John Huston's film " Asphalt Jungle ".  At the release of the film it is a big personal success for Marilyn. The M.G.M. is submerged by mail on its subject but refuses her a contract. Fox engages her. Her career is launched. It is then that bursts the scandal of the calendar (in 1952). Fox terrified ask to her star to deny that it is about her. Marilyn refuses and explains publicly. " I needed money" she will say.

About the scandal of this calendar, the post office considered that it had a pornographic character and in prohibition the distribution in some states. A retouched version then appeared with clothes drawn on the original photo.

At the beginning of 1952, she meets Joe DiMaggio, idol of the baseball. They get married on January 24th, 1954, but Joe does not support Marilyn's success, glance of the men on her, his décolletages and his skin-tight skirts, the divorce is pronounced on October 27th, 1954.

Marilyn is eager for respectability according to her statements, she dreams about a home, for children, for a normal life in parallel in her career. It seems naturally rather difficult to reconcile. The one who receives ± 250 proposals of marriage a week begins to look after her brand image and leaves to New York to follow the lessons of "Actors Studio" steered by Lee Strasberg. She collects many satisfactions and bonuses there so much she shows itself good pupil.

In the period we see her in the arm of Marlon Brando a lot. It is as well in this period that begins her relation with Arthur Miller. Playwright, married and father of 2 children, this one obtains the divorce from his wife on June 11th, 1956 and wife Marilyn June 29th, 1956 (civil marriage). The 1st taken place July a traditional Jewish ceremony, Marilyn having been converted to the Judaism. Always in search for a "true" family, she becomes integrated totally into the family unit of Miller, her 2 children and her parents. The summer, 1956 crossed to Amagansett was the happiest period of Marilyn's life.In July she confides with pregnant enjoyment but it is a happiness of short duration because it is about an extra-uterine pregnancy which it is necessary to interrupt in the big despair of Marilyn which sinks into the depression. Twice we save her from overdoses of barbiturates.

Writer's profession by Miller obliges him a certain solitude which at the beginning, seems to be convenient for Marilyn, but in the long run, the isolation weighs her and Miller insists so that she accepts the shooting of " Some like it hot ". On the trays of cinema she annoys everybody by her whims and also her show delays. At the end of December, she makes a false layer and even the triumph of "Some like it hot " does not bring out her of its depression. Her couple deteriorates. During the shooting of the film " Let's make love " the noise runs of an idyll between Marilyn and Yves Montand. It is more likely that Marilyn was in love with him but that he did not want this adventure. During the shooting of the film " The misfits " specially rewritten by Miller for Marilyn, the relations of the couple go from bad to worse. They part in November, 1960. The divorce will be pronounced on January 20th, 1961. Follows then a long period of depression. Stays in private hospital, abuse of alcohol and pills.

At the beginning 1962 Marilyn with (probably) a connection with Robert Kennedy. It seems to go back up her the morale, she begins the shooting of another film. He is more than possible that she also had a connection with the President Kennedy. Paradoxically, after her death, we shall find an unfinished letter sent to Joe DiMaggio in which she announces him her intention to remarry with him...

In May, 1962, she is urged to sing "Happy Birthday" in the Madison Square Garden for the anniversary(birthday) of the President Kennedy. But she interprets it in her way by singing, by whispering, by panting... What what the President answered: " After so sweet words, I can retire ". The shooting of " Something's got to give" is interrupted in June, 1962, Marilyn being physically too much exhausted cannot continue. She will be forced as well as Dean Martin her partner (who takes her defence) to pay damages to Fox for breach of contract.

In the morning of August 5th, 1962 we discover Marilyn died in her place of residence. Officially the inquiry ends in a suicide, but shall we ever know what really took place? More than 45 years passed and the myth Marilyn is always very alive.
